The picturesque town of Busot is home to the spectacular Canelobre Caves. Only 24km from Alicante, these breathtaking caves are similar to a Gothic cathedral inside, and are well worth a visit..
These caves are believed to date back to 740AD but to have taken more than seven million yearsto be created by the water eroding limestone rock.
The entrance used by visitors today was created during the Civil War, when Canelobre provided refuge for the Republican troops and was used as an aircraft factory and powder keg. This entrance was used to store and repair the aircraft.
The interior has been compared to a great Gothic Cathedral and in fact the acoustics are so good inside that concerts are held here on occasion!
Enjoy the strange and unique shapes which have been created over time within the walls of these incredible caves.
While in Busot, nature lovers can walk to the top of the nearby Cabeço d'Or, at 1,205 metres, to enjoy some breathtaking views.
If this does not take your fancy, you can relax with a glass of wine and some local fare at one of the restaurants in the town.
